Daily Struggles - What it Means to be Poor in America

For the past few years, the economy in the United States (and around the world) has been challenging to say the least. You recently read an article about minimum wage in Australia and how some workers are underpaid. Even though the minimum wage in Australia is much higher than it is here, it still has an impact on the lifestyle of the people who live there.

Be sure to check Edmodo for the necessary videos to watch, articles to read , and games to play before responding here.

What does that mean in the US? Did you know that 1 in 3 working families are considered Low Income Families? So, what if you were stuck with a low paying job? How would that affect you and your family? Could you survive? How would you feel about that? What were the most surprising statistics that you read or stories that you heard? Why?

  1. What is the highest pay in USA and Austraia? I wonder what my job will be and how much I will get paid? I liked the game and the vid

  2. I would hate to be homeless. It seems sad, and I feel sorry for all hobos. And I would pay these people more if I was their employer.

  3. I feel bad for the people who are unemployed because they don't have jobs, they don't have homes they don't have food, they don't get to go to school. They have to be mean to their kids. I learned this is SPENT. My question question is, if I was homeless, and unemployed, why would I want to live on the streets and not at a shelter? What if I had a lot of money why would I be living on the streets like in the video?

  4. If i had a low paying job it would effect my family because we wouldn't be able to do as much and we wouldn't always have enough money to get food and clothing and things like that. The most surprising things i heard were about how many people couldn't pay for food and clothing.

  5. It means that we should help these people but we also must not starve our selves for the fear that we will end up homeless. If I were stuck with a low paying job I would be very sad. Also I would try to go on in life and hope to find someone that would help me. My family would probably be in pretty bad shape, I would hope I had a spouse and that he had a good paying job, so our family could survive in this awful economy. I thought it was surprising that 1 in 3 working families are considered a low income family. This surprised me because I would think that it was 1 in 15 not 1 in 3. This fact is very sad.

  6. I think the low paying jobs would be so effective to my family because I will be so low on my money most of the time. I will also probably make a lot of bad decisions in life to start of with.

  7. If I was stuck with a low paying job I might go on strike. I might also go to quart. This would really effect my family especially my kids in healthiness and mentally. I think I would be able to survive even if I had a low paying job. I would work hard and maybe even find a better job. I would feel really bad if I had a low paying job because it isn't good to do this to a family, no matter how much money it saves the business. Some of the most surprising things that I have heard is that people with food stamps used to trade them for drugs and other things like that.

  8. I don't believe that if some one is hungry it means there homeless and lives on the streets because I become hungry thousands of times and i still live in a nice home. i did not know that 1 in 3 income families are considered low income family's. if I was stuck with a low paying job I would go to college so i could get a better one. it would effect me because i might not be able to buy everything i need and maybe go hungry or homeless i don't know how it would effect my family

  11. I would move and try to find another job or look for government programs that would help people like me. It would affect my family a lot because my parents would be the only ones working and no one else in my family could work. It is scary to think about. Being poor, living on the streets, no money, no food, no clothes except for 1 pair, the one you are wearing. The most surprising story I have heard of was when someone who was living in in Kansas went to a casino. When they were there, someone pick-pocketed there wallet and went to the bank and cleaned it out. So that person lost there house because the couldn't afford to pay for it and lived in a car.

  12. I would think that if somebody was homeless, I would tell employers to give them a chance! There are hobos and poor people out there that just can't get a job because they are poor or homeless. And a lot of them could be top notch employees.

So that effects me because, the more people layed off their jobs, the more people end up homeless and poor, meaning that companies won't hire them. One person loosing their job can lead to thousands loosing theirs. It's all part of the economy cycle. When more people are layed off, that means that less money is circling around, and that could lead to another great depression! It effects all of us!

  13. In the US it means that a lot of family's go without money and therefore they can go without food or power in there homes. I didn't know that 1 in 3 working families are considered Low Income Families. If I was stuck with a low paying job it might be kind of hard for my family but my parents work also and so does my older brother so I think my family would be able to get by. So since we would all be working it wouldn't really effect my family. Yes we would be able to survive. I would feel fine with being able to survive. I don't really know what surprised me the most because it kind of all surprised me. It surprised me because I hadn't realized how many people were homeless or had a home but were on the verge of not having one.

  14. It would be hard to live on the streets, and that is why people that are doing well and can support themselves and their children should donate and volunteer to help those men, women, and children. Some people may put this on themselves by being to lazy to get a job, but some people could have been fired. I hope nothing like this happens to me and my family. I also like what Melissa said because she made a point of how if she got a low paying job it would not only effect her but i t would effect her family.

  15. If that were to be me i would most likely be a different person then who i am now.If i was stuck in a low paying job well if i was older and was married and had kids I would be struggling like my life is one step from starvation,Homeless ect. Probably almost like i was holding on a rope like 15feet off the ground and the rope is breaking and i have to pull myself back up along with saving my kids and husband. If it was my family now,I can Imagine,I t could leave to divorces :'( and oh my gosh Pain,Struggle,Depression. I would mostly likely not survive if my Mom and Dad divorced from it,Id feel like my life is falling apart.Either way it would make life WAY hard.
