Straight Forward Entreprenurship or Taking Advantage of Others?

As we become busy with our day-to-day lives, it's easy to take the little things for granted. Because we expect everything to run smoothly all of the time, when things do develop differently than we expect them to, it can certainly have a huge impact upon us.

This is certainly what happened in China last summer with the 60-mile traffic jam that lasted for two weeks. It didn't take the locals long to determine that a little bit of money could be made from the situation. When situations like these arise, what do they mean for the rest of us? Have we lost a little empathy for others? Are we prone to take advantage when the opportunity presents itself?

  1. I think it was wrong to have been happy for the situation. I am happy that locals gave the travelers food, but they should have done it is a more welcome manner. . They should not have charged the travelers for the food.

  2. I don't expect a lot to run smoothly most of the time I am in a situation that has everything having a problem. I would hate to be in a traffic jam that is 60 miles that would stink especially cause it would take forever to get out. I wouldn't think that it would take two weeks

  3. I think that a lot of us do think that everything will run smoothly, but the one thing we don't think about is how anything could go wrong, and that we could be in the middle on a tragic storm or something. Life isn't gonna be a fairytale.
I think being in a 60 mile traffic jam would be scary to me. I'm with Cole on this one, though. I wouldn't think it would take 2 weeks, maybe just one day, at the most.

  4. I think that is definitely mean and stupid to be selling food to people that are stuck in there cars because they could be starving and not have the money to pay. Like Cole I would hate being in a 60 mile traffic jam because it would be hard to sleep and eat and do pretty much everything if your trapped in your car. I also agree with Cole that I wouldn't think it would take that long to get everyone out of their car, but then to clear all the cars I could see how that could be a problem.

  6. I cannot believe that they had to wait that long because of a traffic jam! I would be really aggravated and I would probably cry because I was so mad. I don't think it was fair that the people had to pay a lot of money for some food. I wish the people selling food would see that the people actually in the traffic jam were really, really hungry! I would give them food for free. It would be very hard to sleep because you would imagine that a lot of people would be honking their horns a lot! That would not be fun!

  7. It tells us we need to do something about like call the police or something. We probably did loose a little empathy.

  8. I'm surprised that people could put up with waiting in their cars for 2 weeks. That is a long time, I feel really bad for those people.

  9. They mean that there are people in the world that actually would try and take advantage of other people. It is very wrong to do this and sad that people would do these things to other. It makes us feel unsafe and uncertain that we can trust people. If I was in this situation I would be very sad that I had to buy these things for such a high price. Also if I was in the situation that I new these people were so hungry they would buy food for any price including high. I think that I would probley sell things but for a lower price than usual instead of a higher price. Can we trust anyone???

  10. I think that once our lives become busier we take what we have for granted- well some people do. There are some people who are spoiled and are mean and don't take things for granted because they think they are going to get everything that they want. This is wrong.

  12. Waiting in a traffic jam for 2 weeks is a long time. I would starve or something if there was no food or water. I could get out of the car and walk to a store and buy food. I think that it is selfish for people to think problem as making money out of it instead of help those people. I also wonder if the police did anything about this while still early and able to.

  14. When stuff like this happens it could have an effect on us if it's close but if it's as far away as China I don't think that it would have much effect on us. I think that maybe some people are losing empathy for others because some of the people were making the people that were trapped in cars pay money for food and some people didn't have any money with them or they just didn't have any money at all! I think that people are taking advantage of others when they have the chance.

  15. It is a good thing that the locals gave travelers food because if you were in a long traffic jam and you didn’t have enough food then you would get very very hungry. But it was stupid how high the prices were.
