Recently in our Communications class we've been listening to audio books. Our current selection, Amos Fortune, has been chosen to help us learn more about early life in the Thirteen Colonies, particularly in relation to the lives of slaves in the U.S.
We know that the people who were forced to leave their homelands to work for others did not have an easy life by any means. We know that their owners were often cruel, if not outright brutal toward those slaves who were in their care. We also know that slaves had little to no protection under the law.
Based on the book that you've listened to so far, what has surprised you about the slaves' experiences? What have you learned that you wouldn't have expected to have happened? What would you have done if you lived during that period?
I am surprised that the slaves were free and some were able to jump of the ship and be safer than on the ships. I have learned that some t=slave were able to get away and have freedom. I would have not treated people poorly I would have gave them better life's.
ReplyDeleteI like the story Amos Fortune one reason is because it is on the audio book so you can tell a little better about there emotion. I f I was white I would try to stop it but not to much to kill myself or anything. If I was African or black I would gather a bunch of other Africans/blacks and stop them from getting anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that there was actually someone who cared about one of the slaves and treated them mostly like any old person. If I had lived in this time I probably wouldn't want a slave because it is cruel and I am capable of working on my own and stuff.
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised that Amos has forgotten most of his life in Africa. I didn't expect him to be able to save up so much money to free himself and so many other black slaves. If I had lived in this period of time I probably would have had a slave to because of the way I grew up. If I was like I am now I would have protested against slavery.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that some slaves would jump off the boat and rather drown than live. If I lived in this time I wouldn't get a slave because I think it is cruel.I would have help slaves get freedom because people can work for there self.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it is fair for someone with just a different color skin to get treated like that. I'm curious on how the slaves broke free from the chains/ropes and jumped off board. If I had a slave, I'd treat it 10 times better.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that the slaves were free and some were able to jump off the ship and be safer than on the ships. I have learned that slaves sometimes could buy their freedom. I would really hope I wasn't a slave!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't like what they did with the slaves a long time ago, i don't think it was fair they had slaves at all. If they didn't want the slaves to disobey them they should have treated them better. I was very surprised to find out what all of the horrible things they did to them. I was so surprised because the other day in Global Studies we were talking about the Deceleration of Independence. It said all men should get treated the same and fairly, well if you were a man and you were a slave you were still a man, and I didn't understand how they could do the things to them that they did. I think it is very sad how they made a new name for Atmoon, and he kept saying "Atmoon" but no one would listen to him. It was very sad, to hear about him and what happened on the ship.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that its fair that people (in that time) with different skin color got treated differently. It was interesting to hear about the ship ride to North America. I also think that changing his name was kinda mean, like Chelsie. I think that your name is kind of something to remember himself as. I like the story, other than the selling part, its cool. Well not the slave thing, but yeahh.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that they would cut the legs of the nigros/blacks if they tried to escape. Also if I was a white I would not cut of there legs because they would not be worth as much money if they could not walk. If I was white I would have a slave only because I would not of known better but as soon as I heard that the black slaves were being freed I would have freed all of my slaves. Also if I was a slave I would of worked hard so I was not whipped and obey until the day that I was set free or passed to another owner and live a new life as a free little girl and have a family that loves me not owns me. It is not fair that these people would be treated so unfairly just becuse they were a diffrent color. I am very glad I wasn't born a slave in this life period and I was not black. People are still treated unfairly becuse of there skin color!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that some slaves would jump off the boat and rather drown than live. I would not have thought that a slave that escaped would go back to help others escape. If I lived in this time I wouldn't get a slave because I think it is cruel.I would have help slaves get freedom because people can work for there self.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that surprised me most was how mean they treated the slaves. In the past I knew that the white people treated them badly but I never really knew so this story has taught me that. Something that I've learned that I hadn't expected was that someone did take Amos in more as a person that a slave. If I had lived in that time I would try to be more far.
ReplyDeleteBooks make me think of time that the setting is in, and it makes me think about how people lived back then. When I read fiction books it makes me think what if this was real life. When I read non-fiction books I want to go exploring. So many types of books can make you want to do so many things. Books never make me sad but Amos Fortune gave me tears and excitement and nervousness, I never felt real deep emotions like this book.
ReplyDeleteWell first of all I like how we listened to a audio book and how we got to color while doing it. I think that listening to a story really gets you involved in it more than just reading one. I also think that if I were him I would be scared, happy, and confused at the same time. I also think that back in that time it was very wrong to have slaves. I think that slaves shouldn't be allowed anywhere, ever! I think they are wrong and unfair! I like how the story was sad, happy, and scary at the same time all at once sometimes. I enjoyed it a lot! I hope we can do it again!
